Sylhet is a holy city of Hazrat Shah Jalal (R:), Hazrat Shah Paran (R:) & Sree Chaitanya Mahaprovu with 2 leaves & 1 bud, which is renowned as the spiritual capital city of Bangladesh wherein our Sylhet District Bar Association is situated.


Our said Bar Association has been trying to establish rule of law in the country as well as in south Asia region. Sylhet District Bar was established in 1874. Our distinguished members are engaged in Parliament, Judiciary & Administrative sector, especially former Chief Justice of Bangladesh Justice Mr. Mahmudul Amin Chowdhury & former Chief Justice of Bangladesh Justice Mr. Surendra Kumar Sinha were the learned members of our said Association. Moreover numerable members are Justice in both Appellate & High Court Division of Supreme Court of Bangladesh.

 

Speaker of Assemblies and ministers have been taken from our Bar Association. Late Khan Bahadur Syed Abdul Majid better known as Kaptan Miah Advocate who was a member of this Bar Association was the first minister from Sylhet in Assam. Late Rai Bahadur Promode Chandro Dutta Advocate of this Bar Association was a minister and Executive councilor in Assam. Late Khan Bahadur Abdul Hamid Advocate of this Bar was a Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly and a minister of the Assam Government. He was also a minister in East Pakistan. Late Basanta Kumar Das Advocate a member of this Bar was a speaker and minister in Assam. He was also a central and provincial minister in Pakistan. Late Jashim Uddin Ahmed Advocate a member of this Bar was also a Law Minister in East Pakistan. former Adviser of the caretaker Government of Bangladesh Advocate Sultana Kamal, former Election Commissioner Mr. Sohul Hussain, Ex. M.P & one of the signatories of manuscript of the Constitution of Bangladesh Late Advocate Luthfur Rahman, Ex. M.P. Ismoth Ahmed Advocate, Ex. M.P. Advocate Syed Rafiqul Hoque, Ex. M.P. Advocate Nurul Islam Khan, Ex. M.P. Advocate Shahinoor Pasha Chowdhury were members of this Bar. Ex. Member of the Legislative Assembly Late Advocate Ahmed Ali was a member of our Bar.


We the members of this Association feel proud that two members namely 1. Advocate Abdul Hafiz & 2. Advocate Ram Ranjon Bhattacharjee sacrifice their life in our glorious Liberation war as well as 11 members of us had actively took part as Freedom Fighter in the Liberation war. Our Bar Association has always come forward for rendering good services for the people. There are two thousand & one hundred eighty eight members in this Association, who have been trying to establish the rule of law. Our main ambition is to serve the members including the public general. There have always been cordial relations between the Bench and the Bar here and I hope this tradition will be maintained in future too.

I must have an effort to uphold our long standing tradition & reputation as before and more. I wish long life & success of all the members of our Bar Association.
